How to Build a Launch Email List Before Your Product Is Ready

An email list converts 10x better than social media on launch day. Here is how to build one from zero before your product ships.

The founders who get 500 to 1,000 signups on launch day almost always had 300 to 800 emails collected before they shipped. Email converts better than any other channel because it reaches people in a focused context, can be personalized, and does not depend on an algorithm to deliver your message.

The waitlist landing page

Build a one-page waitlist site before your product is ready. It needs only four elements: a headline describing the product and who it is for, a 1-2 sentence description of the core value, a single email capture form, and optionally a screenshot or image that shows what the product will look like.

Use a tool like Carrd (free), Webflow, or a simple custom page. The goal is to capture email addresses in exchange for early access or a launch notification.

Growing the waitlist before launch

  • Submit to BetaList and similar pre-launch directories — they send waitlist-focused traffic to products that are not yet live.
  • Share your building journey on Twitter, LinkedIn, and Indie Hackers with links back to the waitlist page.
  • Post in communities where your target users are active and offer early access as the value exchange.
  • Add a referral mechanism: "Get early access sooner by referring 3 friends" increases list size by 20 to 40% in most cases.

Nurturing before you launch

Send 2 to 3 emails before launch. The first thanks them for joining and sets expectations. The second shares a specific progress update or behind-the-scenes look. The third announces the launch date and builds excitement. By launch day, your list is warm and engaged — not cold strangers who forgot they signed up.

Add pre-launch directory submissions to your waitlist strategy

UpStart identifies pre-launch platforms like BetaList alongside launch and post-launch platforms, so you have a complete distribution timeline from waitlist to growth.
