Reddit for Startup Promotion: How to Get Traction Without Getting Banned
Reddit has millions of potential customers in category-specific communities. The founders who get traction there follow a completely different approach than traditional marketing.
Reddit users are allergic to self-promotion. Subreddits that allow "Show HN" or "Share your project" posts have strict rules, and posts that feel like ads get downvoted and removed within minutes. But founders who genuinely contribute to communities — answering questions, sharing knowledge, and occasionally mentioning their product in the right context — get remarkably good traction from Reddit.
The right approach to Reddit promotion
Spend karma before you spend it. Create an account, contribute to the communities relevant to your product, and build genuine karma before you post anything promotional. Accounts with low karma posting about their product are flagged as spam. Accounts with established history get benefit of the doubt.
Use the official channels. Many subreddits (r/SideProject, r/startups, r/Entrepreneur, r/SaaS) have specific weekly threads for sharing projects. Post there first. These threads are explicitly for self-promotion and have the highest acceptance rate.
Answer the questions your product solves. When someone in r/freelancers asks "how do I track client invoices without a full accounting system?" and you have an invoice tool — answer genuinely, then mention your product at the end as a disclosure ("I built a tool for this exact problem: [product]"). This is the most effective Reddit strategy: lead with value, mention the product last.
Do an AMA if you have an interesting story. "I built a tool for X after 3 years in the industry, AMA" performs well in relevant subreddits if your background is genuinely relevant.

Reddit works best when your product has wide platform coverage
When a Redditor checks your product after seeing your post, they often look for it on Product Hunt or G2 to validate it. UpStart ensures your product is listed on the platforms that build that trust.
