Building Social Proof From Scratch: Reviews, Testimonials, and Press

Social proof accelerates conversion at every stage. Here is how to build it systematically when you are starting with nothing — no reviews, no press, no case studies.

New visitors to your product ask one implicit question: "Can I trust this?" Social proof answers that question by showing them that other people have already made the decision to trust you and found it worthwhile. Without it, every conversion requires the visitor to independently make a trust leap — and most choose not to.

Stage 1: Activity signals (day 0)

Before you have any reviews or press, you can use activity signals: number of users on the waitlist, number of people who have tried the product, or number of questions answered in your community. Even "Join 47 others on the waitlist" is social proof when you have nothing else.

Stage 2: Direct testimonials (week 1–4)

Email your first 10 to 20 users with a simple ask: "Would you be willing to share 1-2 sentences about your experience with [Product]? I want to put it on the website." Most happy users will respond. Collect their quote and add it to the homepage immediately. Update it every week as you collect better quotes.

Stage 3: Platform reviews (month 2–3)

Once you have 10 to 20 users who have found real value, ask them for reviews on G2, Capterra, or Product Hunt. Link to your review page directly in the email. Each review on these platforms serves as persistent social proof visible to thousands of future buyers during their research process.

Stage 4: Press and directory badges

Featured on Product Hunt, Listed on G2, and similar badges add brand-name social proof even when your user count is small. Submit to these platforms early and prominently display the recognition you receive. A Product Hunt top-5 badge on your homepage communicates legitimacy at a glance.
